A few weekends ago, May 14th, the Austin Valkyries traveled to Norman, Oklahoma to play two matches. One against Oklahoma State University, the other against the University of Oklahoma Roses in our final match of the season.

In the first match of the day, the Valkyries took on the OSU women’s rugby team. The match was an interesting one as two different styles of rugby and experience levels were present on the field. At half, some of the Valkyries and OSU players swapped jerseys and played for the opposing team; it looked like really fun rugby.

OU had a bit of a rough start to our match and we had a hard time containing the Valkyries. In the end, the Valkyries went home big winners but this match was one to set up the Roses for next season.

The only way to get better is to play better teams. Many of our players were in new positions and learning their way around as former Eagles were running the ball down the field towards us. I, for one, am impressed with our team and very proud of our fight all the way to the end. With the Roses being a pretty young team, we learned alot from that match and have set ourselves ready for next season. OU performed beautifully under pressure and are looking forward to next season. In the meantime, we’re gearing up for the heat of summer 7s!
