WOMEN’S D1 CLUB PLAYOFFS – DAY 2 SUMMARY

Day 2 of the USA Rugby Division 1 Women’s Club Playoffs are complete and we now know the teams that will compete at Championships.

Chicago NS vs NOVA
NOVA came out of the gates quick and quickly put pressure on NS and backed them up into their red zone. A shallow kick pass was attempted for the score, but NS was able to stop the attack. From there Chicago NS took over and after a series of pick and gos, Christiane Pheil went over the line for the first unconverted try. NOVA attempted to spread out NS with a few well placed kicks, but NS handled them well. Another quick try before the half and it was NS 10 NOVA 0.

At the start of the second half NS took advantage of a pentaly and slotted a penalty kick. NOVA finally answered back with a beautiful play out wide with an unconverted try. With about twenty minutes left in the half, NS was backed up in their 22m, the pressure continued and a penalty was given up. NOVA slotted the penalty kick and it brought the score to NS 13 NOVA 8. Lots of back and forth play but the score line remained the same at the final whistle.

Final score: Chicago NS 13 NOVA 8

Seattle Breakers vs Chicago
Both of these teams had plenty to prove as their play on Day 1 was not what they would have wanted. Seattle immediately put Chicago under pressure and backed them up inside their 22m. Chicago withstood the pressure for a good 10-12 minutes but then the tension broke when Seattle broke over the line for a try. A few minutes later Seattle went over the line again to bring the score to Seattle 10 Chicago 0.

The second half started with more of the same as Seattle continued to bring the pressure, they scored quickly in the corner to bring the score to Seattle 15 Chicago 0. A few moments later a penalty kick was good for Seattle, putting them up by 18 points. Chicago wasn’t out for the count though and finally got on the board with an unconverted try. With only a few moments left Chicago scored again, but their last minute push wasn’t enough, Seattle takes fifth place 18-12.

Final score: Seattle 18 Chicago 12

Philadelphia vs ORSU
This match was a tale of two Phillys, Day 1 Philly was confident and strong, Day 2 Philly was tired and overwhelmed. ORSU took advantage of this and brought the pain. Philly worked hard but couldn’t quite string it together and ORSU walked away with the victory and a spot in the National Championship defeating Philadelphia 32-0.

Final score: Philadelphia 0 ORSU 32

Detroit vs Atlanta
Atlanta had an easy road to this final and so all the pressure was on them…they didn’t dissapoint. Even when Tia Blosser from Atlanta was sin binned early in the first half, they didn’t panic. Shortly after that, flyhalf, Heather Hale slotted a penalty kick putting them up by three points. A few moments later a Detroit player was also yellow carded so each side felt the pain of playing short. Once the teams were back at full strength the tries came quickly for Atlanta. Hale continued her good work and slotted the conversions bringing the score to Atlanta 22 Detroit 0 at the half.

The second half was a brilliant display of support play by Atlanta, three converted tries (Hale converted) and the final score was Atlanta 39 Detroit 0. Atlanta moves on to face ORSU at the D1 Club National Championships.

Final score: Detroit 0 Atlanta 39
