NOVA hosting Women’s Qualifying Tournament for Collegiate 7s

8218_143926503016_2877052_nThis is the first year there are qualifiers for the Women’s National Collegiate Championship 7s Tournament (in the past it has been invite only) and NOVA really wants to get as many teams involved as possible and help promote 7s. As a club, we are happy to see that there is so much interest in women’s college 7s that there are a number of qualifying tournaments this year.

On Sunday, October 27th, the NOVA Women’s Rugby Club will host a collegiate 7s tournament at Signal Hill Park in Manassass, VA. The winners of the competitive bracket of the women’s division will  earn an Automatic Qualification to USA Rugby College 7s National Championship on November 23rd and November 24th in Greensboro, NC

Teams do not have to commit to Nationals to play in this event, but we already have 4 teams committed to play that are aiming to qualify for nationals, so we are expecting quality competition. There will be an Open Division for teams looking to develop in 7s, but not looking to go to Nationals.

Registration is $275 for each team’s first side and $175 for each additional side entered.

Divisions will be limited due to field space, so teams are encouraged to register soon. Teams can register by sending an email to NOVACollegiate7s@gmail.com

In addition to being a qualifying tournament for Nationals, it is important to add that we are holding a free clinic for all interested players and teams featuring NOVA 7s head coach Dana Creager, who is also on the USA Olympic Development Staff.  Clinic coaches will also include former USA Eagle and team captain Toshi Palamo, former USA Eagle and team captain Beth Black, former USA Eagle and team captain Lauren Hoeck, former USA Eagle and current Serevi coach CJ Hildreth, and all of the players from the 2013 national 7s runner-up NOVA Women’s 7s team.  We’ll cover everything from handling drills to reading space and decision-making, and will send players off with drills they can do at home.
NOVA will also offer guest coaches for the day to help teams that are interested.

NOVA Tournament directors offered they are “pleased with the response we have received so far. We expect this tournament to fill up, but we still have spots available. We are excited about the prospect of this being an annual event and going forward expanding the size of the tournament.”
