Vegas 7s – No International Rugby Women’s Tournament?

YSC Rugby BroadcastingYou’ve probably heard by now, but the 2014 Vegas 7s Tournament will not include the USA Rugby Women’s Eagles or any of the usual International Teams (Note, there are a few developmental teams/rep sides sprinkled throughout the other divisions).

I’ll just wait a second and let that sink in. Is the anger boiling up yet?

If you watch the other news resources out there, the news has been present, but on the USA Rugby site…zip, nada! The only thing they’ve posted is the upcoming Atlanta 7s Pools. Side note, if you haven’t bought tickets to this event, please consider purchasing a ticket even if you can’t attend….there are rumors that only a hundred tickets have been sold. At least when the event was in Houston, TX there were over 3,000 attendees and more tickets sold…

So this year, YSC will be there, like usual, but we won’t be videotaping or broadcasting the Women’s International Tournament. This is a huge change for us as we’ve been involved in some form or fashion  since 2009. We’ve since changed our course to help out the LVI Tournament and referee. We will also bring updates on the various #wrugby LVI Divisions as we can. We do this with a bit of sadness, but understand that the funds aren’t in place for the women, maybe the well-funded men can win a game this time around?

Check out the Women’s LVI Pools and Schedule by Division here. Also we’d like to highlight those teams and administrators that are working to bring high level rugby to Vegas regardless of the support from USA Rugby!

  1. So, to summarise, once upon a time there was a well supported, successful women’s sevens in at LV. The some genius (who? in the IRB or USA Rugby?) decides to run a separate WSWS at a different venue with no existing tradition. Result, all but disappearance of LV7s and a WSWS with almost no support.

The WSWS works well when it is part of another competition (Amsterdam, Dubai) especially if there is a bit of a tradition of women’s sevens. Played separately in a venue with no tradition … you only sell 100 tickets.

Trouble is that the blame will be placed at the door of women’s rugby, not at the door of the eejuts who make these mad venue decisions.
