from Rah Rah Rugby (translated by Leah Ford):
Brazil Rugby (CBRu) is developing its High Performance program for their women’s national sevens team, leading up to the historic 2016 Olympics in Rio. The Rio Olympics will mark the first time that Rugby Sevens joins the Olympic Program.
This is a unique opportunity to compete in the Olympics, a dream for most athletes around the world, and the CBRu is providing the chance to turn this dream into reality! This development initiative includes identifying the best athletes eligible to represent Brazil who are currently living abroad, and incorporate them into our international-level High Performance program as soon as possible.
Part of the CBRu’s strategy when approaching such important events is the identification of athletes with Brazilian descent who are eligible to participate in the confederation’s High Performance Program. To facilitate this process, the CBRu has partnered with Women’s Rugby Recruitment (WRR), the biggest/best agency of global recruitment for female athletes to connect/advertise and identify potential athletes.
In order to qualify for this program, athletes must meet the following criteria:
- Possession of a Brazilian passport, or
- Were in Brazil or are of Brazilian descent (at least one parent or grandparent born in Brazil)
- Have no history of playing for another national team within the past 3 years (in accordance with Regulation 8 of the IRB for Olympic participation).
- Able to complete 17 rounds of the Yo-Yo Recovery Test (http://www.topendsports.com/testing/tests/yo-yo-intermittent.htm).
- Able to complete 10 rounds of the Yo-Yo Endurance Test (http://www.topendsports.com/testing/tests/yo-yo-endurance.htm).
- Possess the passion and willpower to participate in the highest level of competition.
Applicants will also need to submit the following information:
- Physical statistics (height and weight).
- Date of birth.
- Rugby experience (years playing the sport) and the highest level previously played (including clubs and other national teams).
- Position(s) played (Preferred position and two others previously played).
- At least two references, with preference for video recordings.
If the description above interests you and you think that you’ve got what it takes to be an Olympic athlete, WRR and the Brazilian Rugby Confederation want to get to know you! This search is not limited to current rugby players, but is also open to other athletes who currently complete at an international level in soccer, netball, handball, or track.
