Legal Advice Regarding Rugby Injury Claims for UK Players

Rugby players are in one of the highest risk categories when it comes to suffering serious injuries in sport.  It’s obvious why this is the case due to the high energy, hard tackling, and hard contact nature and aspects of rugby, but it’s a risk that we all take due for our love for the game.  There have been various high profile cases in the UK press in recent years about extremely serious injuries occurring on the field of play, but this is never going to stop committed players from wanting to get out there and do it.

UK Statistics on Rugby Injury Cases

During the playing season, up to a quarter of all players will suffer an injury.  This is no real surprise considering that a player will on average make around 30 tackles in each game.  Neck injuries are some of the most common form of rugby injury and typically happen when there is a mismatch between the front rows on both teams.

When compared to other popular sports such as soccer, rugby injuries will occur almost three times as much, and the age group most at risk are those aged between ten and eighteen years old.

Positions at Risk of Rugby Injury

The positions that are most at risk of injury are:

  • Flankers and hookers are injured most frequently
  • Forwards are hurt more often than the backs due to their physical role in the team
  • In the backs positions, wings, fullbacks, and centres are in the high risk category
  • Locks are the position in the scrum at most risk

Evidently rugby injuries will occur, and in most cases they will be minor enough to not require hospital treatment.  However, what happens when you are injured by an opposing player, or due to a badly maintained pitch, and those injuries are severe enough to require medical treatment?  Well, in this case, providing that you can prove that a third party was at fault, then you could be eligible for some form of personal injury compensation.

How to Prevent Having to Make a Rugby Injury Claim

Whilst the risk of injury can never be completely removed, there are some things that you can do to lessen the chances of rugby injuries occurring.  Most rugby players suffer an injury during the initial start of the playing season.  Medical experts suggest that this is probably due to a lack of pre-season fitness conditioning and preparation.

With that in mind, we always recommend that any form of pre-season training should gradually increase in terms of intensity and physical contact.  This will help to prepare rugby players for the new season ahead and will reduce the chances of injuries occurring.
