South Africa women win Rugby Africa sevens title

South Africa claim the Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens Championship title in Zimbabwe after going through both days of competition unbeaten.

Having opened up the competition on Saturday with convincing victories against hosts Zimbabwe, Senegal and Namibia, South Africa then overpowered Uganda and Kenya on Sunday to claim the Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens silverware for the sixth time.

Captain Lorinda Brown (left of main picture) and her team wasted no time making their presence felt on the second day of action as they combined an effective attacking and defensive effort to defeat Uganda 29-7 and book their place in the cup final against arch rivals Kenya, who, with their recent Olympic experience behind them, were always going to be tough to beat.
As expected, South Africa were pushed all the way by the Kenyans, who finished 11th out of 12 teams at the rugby sevens competition in Rio, and had to overturn a 10-7 half-time deficit before winning 22-17.

In the third-place play-off Zimbabwe beat Uganda 24-10.

South Africa’s next assignment is the Japan Invitational in Hokkaido this weekend, where they will go up against eight Japanese club teams and sides from New Zealand and Australia.
