Slippery Rock Women’s Rugby has Outscored their Opponents 227-0 this Season

from The Online Rocket:

SRU women’s rugby team has been untouchable so far this season. The Rock has outscored its opponents, 227-0.

Senior Meghan Miller said the team has been able to rotate players in because of its success.

“It’s exciting,” she said. “It’s not like we’re keeping our starters in during the game to run up the score. You’re only allowed a limited number of substitutes, but with our success we have been able to play about five subs a game.”

The Rock defeated West Virginia University, 32-0, to capture the Allegheny Rugby Union for the fifth consecutive year, qualifying for the Midwest regional.

Miller said that many seniors recently graduated from a team that made a trip to the Elite 8 last year.

“It’s a mixture of us getting better and having freshman playing well for their first time playing rugby,” she said.

At the Midwest regional, SRU beat Western Michigan University (5-0) and Loyola University (Ill.) (39-0) on its way to the Final Four. On Saturday in Iowa Falls, Iowa, the Rock will be facing Ball State University (Ind.) for an opportunity to head to the Midwest regional final for the second consecutive year.

Last season, the Rock won its first ever Midwest Regional title.

“It’s impressive because most of the campus doesn’t know about rugby,” Miller said. “I talked to WVU’s coach and if we play our game, we should be able to beat BSU.”
