The International Rugby Board has confirmed that the four Unions who entered the race to host Women’s Rugby World Cup 2014 last month have progressed to the next stage of the tender process.
Kazakhstan, New Zealand, Samoa and USA have expressed their formal intention to tender to host the premier 15-a-side tournament for women.
“We have never enjoyed such high interest in hosting Women’s Rugby World Cup at a time when the Women’s Game is experiencing rapid global popularity and growth,” said Rugby World Cup Limited Chairman Bernard Lapasset.
“The Rugby family is looking forward to being in London next year for Women’s Rugby World Cup 2010, which will be the biggest tournament to date. The host of Women’s Rugby World Cup 2014 will inherit a strong competition from England with great players, exceptional female officials and a whole set of new supporters.”
The level of interest is another significant boost for Women’s Rugby World Cup following the phenomenal rise in participation and the introduction of Women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens this year, plus Olympic Games inclusion.
“We are working closely with the RFU to deliver a wonderful tournament in August and September, which will showcase all that is great about the Women’s Game,” said IRB Women’s Development Manager Susan Carty.
“All the Unions bidding for Women’s Rugby World Cup 2014 have a rich heritage of Women’s Rugby in their countries, and we can look forward to back-to-back successful tournaments.”

Scrumhalf, this is very significant. Think about it, we have had any major male stars from MLB, the NFL, the NBA, the NHL and NASCAR who have “Come out”. Gareth Thomas is a man who has had over 100 caps for rugby-mad Wales, was a captain of the British&Irish Lions and played a significant role in Toulouse winning the Heineken Cup a few years ago.
On the one hand, it’s silly that this is even newsworthy in 2009.Ok, a now openly gay man has succeeded in the world of rugby. For people who are shocked that a gay man can thrive in the world of rugby, people need to remember that There are many gays who have served with honor in the US military-but cannot do so openly because of “Don’t ask-don’t tell”. Just because you are gay male does not mean that you are a wimp. I guess for the people who still buy the limp-wristed stereotypes, Thomas’ coming out should make them think twice about buying into those antiquated prejudices.
With my hometown of Minneapolis hosting the Bingham Cup this June, I hope the tournament organizers will extend an invitation to Gareth Thomas.
What does that article have to do with being gay at all? I mean I think that it is wonderful that the Women’s Rugby World Cup is so big, but the article doesn’t say one word about sexuality…and really nothing about men at all. I am just a little bit confused about that response to the article, and why being a gay man who succeeded in rugby has any relation at all to the location of the 2014 Women’s Rugby World Cup. (Which by the way I an VERY excited about!)
