Washington State Runs Over Temple on Way to USA Rugby DII Women’s College Championship

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Following a Washington Sate 15-5 victory over the No. 2 seed Norwich yesterday, the Cougars ran over the top-ranked Temple Owls on Saturday to clinch the USA Rugby Division II Women’s Championship title at Stanford University’s Steuber Rugby Stadium.

“We just tried to be very mentally prepared coming into this weekend,” Washington State Women’s Rugby Coach Leah Hammon said. “We knew Temple had speed and we worked a lot on our defensive line and putting a lot of pressure on them.”

The score is definitely proof of that, as Washington State held Temple University scoreless throughout 80 minutes of play.

The larger WSU forward pack didn’t have much problem running the ball either, as their first two tries came from lock Mileka Grager and prop Tiffany Gaden.

From that point, it was all about the backs, as inside center, Meaghan Hughes touched two tries down and helped maintain the momentum to carry the WSU Team to a 37-0 shutout of the Owls.
