Week 6 WPL: All Blues vs DC Furies Match Report + Video

On Saturday the All Blues and Furies played the last game of their regular season in Vallejo, CA. When they last met in Maryland, the All Blues won by only 7 points so both teams knew there was the potential for the game to go either way, but the All Blues pulled out another win to finish their season 4-2 while the Furies finished their season 0-6. But it is this reporter’s opinion that the Furies’ record does not do them justice. The Furies played with an incredible amount of heart on Saturday and even had the first try of the match at minute 3 (from #8 Kelly Clerkin), but were overpowered by a Berkeley team that knew they had to win, and win big, in order to compete in the top tier in Arizona.

After DC’s early score, the All Blues answered back with 4 tries, 2 apiece from wing Nathalie Marchino and flanker Phoebe Boone. In minute 24, Furies wing Ida Bernstein made her presence known with a try out wide, but the All Blues answered back with 2 more before halftime (from wing Irene Gardner and a textbook mauling lineout touchdown try from lock Helen Behr) as well as a penalty kick from All Blues flyhalf Ruth Bryson to usher in the break. Halftime score: All Blues 37 – Furies 10.

In the second half, the All Blues continued in their groove, playing gorgeous rugby despite the sloppy and muddy conditions. Flanker Vix Folayan put up a pair of tries while fullback Ashley English and rookie prop Julia Diskin each posted another 5 points on the board. Marchino brought her try count to 4 for the day with another pair in the second half and Bryson’s 4 successful conversions brought the All Blues points tally to 75 while the All Blues defense kept the Furies out and their point tally at 10.
