Brown Women’s Rugby Team Seeks Varsity Recognition

Brown Women’s Rugby has been pushing for varsity status at their University for the past 10 years. Women’s Rugby has been at Brown since 1977 and boasts an excellent record. They’ve won six consecutive titles in the Ivy League and the squad has made three consecutive appearances at the USA Rugby Final Four. They also have been routinely ranked in the top five collegiate teams in the last seven years. Despite all of this it hasn’t been easy to maintain this status as a dominate collegiate team. Like most rugby teams they rely on donations and fundraising events, while maintaining a full academic schedule.

Several teams across the nation have been seeking NCAA status and while some have had success, most have hit roadblocks. For more on Brown’s journey to reach Varsity status, read the original article at The Brown Daily Herald.

There are currently 5 varsity women’s rugby programs: Quinnipiac UniversityEastern Illinois University: (Division 1); West Chester University (Division 1); and Bowdoin College, and Norwich University (Division 3).
