WPL Match Summary & Video – Beantown vs DC Furies by Erika Kim

Beantown RFC hosted the Washington DC Furies under a sunny sky at Moakley Park in Boston, MA. The game was another battle of the forwards and after last week’s loss to the Amazon’s, Beantown was looking to redeem themselves.

The Furies rattled Beantown with their kick-offs, often finding the open space and creating disorganization on the re-starts. Furies forwards and backs worked well together to launch hard-hitting attacks at the Beantown backline, but in the end it wasn’t enough.

Evan Hoese scored Beantown’s fist try of the game and though Emily Jones struggled with her kicks in the first half, she made the conversion. Beantown’s fullback, Katie “Sally” O’Malley, scored the next try off of a breakawy into the corner of the try-zone making it 12-0. Later in the first half, number eight Mel Denham insert into the backline and scored to bring the score to 17-0. Just before the end of the half, Beantown’s wing, Ashley “Flicka” Clancy, scored after a pass to the weak side off of a scrum around the Furies’ 15 meter line. The half ended with Beantown up 22-0

The second half started with a kick-off from Beantown. Shortly after, Beantown’s Mari Wallace powered through the Furies forwards to score. Jones added the conversion to bring the score to 29-0. Soon after the forward score, Beantown swung the ball out to the wing from a scrum in Furies territory and Clancy scored a second time with Jones adding the conversion. Both Beantown and the Furies brought in some fresh legs mid-way into the second half with substitutions in the forwards and backs. One of Beantown’s subs proved to be fortuitous with flanker Jackie Cairns scoring after some forward-supported passing. O’Malley added two with the conversion to make it 43-0, Beantown. The referee was handing out free kicks to both sides for early scrum engagement infractions. More Beantown forward scoring happened with tries from Elizabeth “E” Fierman and Denham again, off of a quick free kick taken as a result of another early scrum engagement by the Furies. O’Malley made both conversions. The final whistle blew and Beantown came away with the win. The final score was 57-0.

Beantown will get next week off, but travel to Pennsylvania on the 29th to meet with Keystone. The Furies will play host to the Twin City Amazons on September 30th.
