The last week of WPL action is complete and we now know the Top Tier and Bottom Tier WPL teams for Championships. But lets take a look back at the action from last week:
Blue Conference
This week the Amazon’s continued their winning ways as they destroyed the DC Furies 85-0. Lynelle Kuglar continued her strong running as she accounted for seven of the tries herself. The Amazons boast 4 out of 5 of the top scorers in the WPL at this point.
The match between Beantown and Keystone this week started off a bit slow, it could have been due to the cold and blustery weather… Beantown was first to make waves though as a counter attack off a kick was returned for a try by Ashley Clancy. Keystone was next to get on the board with two back to back tries, this put the score at halftime Keystone 12 Beantown 5. The second half showcased each team scoring multuple times from different set pieces or in open play. At the final whistle though the score line was Beantown 29 Keystone 17.
Red Conference
This week’s match between the Berkeley All Blues and the Glendale Raptors was heavily anticipated. A win by Berkeley could have shaken up the rankings a bit! Both teams came out hard at the first whistle but Glendale was first to strike with wing Andrea Prusinski dotting down in the corner. Berkeley was quick to answer though with scrumhalf Jossy Tseng sneaking around a ruck to get over the line. From there the play was back and forth until the second half when Glendale’s hooker Kit Wagner went under the posts and flyhalf Hannah Stolba converted to put Glendale up 12-7. Berkeley didn’t take long to strike back though to bring the score to an even 12-12, the conversion for that try was good as flyhalf Ruth Bryson was on the money, 14-12. At the seventy sixth minute, Prusinski got her second try of the match. At the final whistle the score stood at Berkeley 14 Glendale 17.
The last match of the weekend saw the San Diego Surfers host New York. From the kickoff it was clear that the Surfers were going to move the ball wide and move it often. Surfer fullback Katie Lorenz struck first as she slid in the corner for an unconverted try. From there the teams battled hard at the ruck and brilliant defensive work by both teams were the highlight of the day. Finally at the twenty sixth minute New York broke down and Surfers flyhalf Marea Blue was able to get over the line, Val Griffith would slot the conversion, Surfers 12 New York 0. Soon after Berkeley was able to get on the board but that would be their only try as wing Angela Yue scored in the corner, no conversion. From there the Surfers turned up the heat and spread the ball around for multiple tries. Final score was San Diego Surfers 31 New York 5.
