After a tough loss to Minnesota two weeks ago, the Berkeley All Blues took the bye week as an opportunity to prepare without distraction for their next opponent, the San Diego Surfers. Head Coach Adriaan Ferris was looking for a tightened up offensive system, and he got it, in a high scoring 63-7 victory against San Diego.

Although the Surfers fielded the ball well on the kickoff, the All Blues immediately came out with strong hits that pushed the Surfers back, resulting in negative gains. After a few San Diego scrums, the All Blues were able to steal the ball thanks to hooker Katy Augustyn. Flyhalf Ruth Bryson gave the ball the boot, and the All Blues were able to contest it for the turnover. Lucy Croy, playing at center, brought the ball in for the first try of the day.

From there, Berkeley controlled the territory, the ball, and the score of the half. First half tries came from Lucy Croy, Jenn Sever, and Nathalie Marchino (3), bringing the score to 29-0.

After the half, Berkeley’s Phoebe Boone immediately came out with a big break for a score. But San Diego was determined not to be part of a shutout, and hooker Becca Williams brought the ball in for the lone Surfers try of the game. After that try, the Surfers had renewed energy, and started spending more time in All Blues territory, but every time they got within the 22, Ruth Bryson was there to kick the ball downfield.

Berkeley did a good job at forcing turnovers, and when they did, they were able to capitalize on it with tries. The remaining tries in the game came from Jenn Sever (2), Nathalie Marchino, Tina Nesberg, and Jaymie Shuckle. The final score was 63-7.

The All Blues take on the Minnesota Amazons for a rematch in Minnesota this Sunday, October 6th at 11:00 AM EST. For live action updates, follow @MinnesotaAmazon.
