USA Rugby encourages girls and women to Try On Rugby

tor-logoA few weeks ago USA Rugby announced with quite the amount of fanfare that they have launched a new campaign aimed at girls and women to “Try on Rugby”. Immediately after the launch, some members of the #wrugby community expressed their displeasure with the all pink theme. If you have kids or nieces, you know that when trying to buy something for little girls, that sh*t is all pink! The history of pink and girls is quite long…recently there was a big stink about this when Legos debuted an all pink lego set. Here in Austin, TX and across the nation there is a huge movement by a large number of parents that are creating their own children’s clothing lines to include non-pink items (and non-glitter!) for their girls. I think the major argument is that we don’t need to throw pink on rugby for girls and women to want to try it.

With all of that aside, we are YSC do think it is great that USA Rugby has put together this initiative and we love that it encourages girls to try rugby and also trying to keep women involved after they stop playing with emphasis on coaching, refereeing and administration. We’ve posted about the lack of of women’s rugby players participation after college and the drop off is astounding.

We know there are other thoughts out there about this initiative, some positive and some negative, we’d like to hear from you! Feel free to drop us an email or hit us up on the comments below, Twitter or Facebook.
