Women’s Premier League Partners with Try on Rugby

from USA Rugby:

BOULDER, Colo. — USA Rugby is thrilled to announce the Women’s Premier League (WPL) will be partnering with Try on Rugby. Try on Rugby is USA Rugby’s new development initiative focused on increasing the number of girls and women involved in rugby.

Each team in the WPL will take an active role in developing rugby in their community through outreach in schools, community organizations and facilitating a youth rugby initiative (i.e. flag league). USA Rugby will provide each team with a grant and materials to support the teams’ work in their communities.

“Try on Rugby is about giving young girls the opportunity to play rugby while also engaging women to get involved in giving back,” USA Rugby Youth Development Manager Erin Kennedy said. “We are very excited that the WPL teams are dedicated to the cause and taking an active role in this initiative.”

One team that is very excited for the program is the San Diego Surfers.

“The Surfers are getting involved in Try on Rugby because we think it’s a great way to interact with our community and really grow the game from a lot of different avenues,” San Diego Surfers President Vivian Hansen said. “We’re hoping to generate sustainable interest in the sport and impact young lives.”

USA Rugby is hosting a Try on Rugby celebration in conjunction with the WPL Championship in Philadelphia this Nov. as a kickoff for the program. Be sure to also catch the WPL referees in their pink Try on Rugby jerseys throughout the season.
