Surfers vs Berkeley MATCH REPORT & VIDEO

The last Surfers home weekend of the fall was a double header, with Berkeley and the Surfers both fielding two sides. The WPL match started with the Surfers receiving and almost immediately being pushed back into their five by Berkeley’s hard defense. A quick kick to touch led to a stolen lineout by Berkeley, which set the All Blues up for possession and capitalization by swinging the ball out and getting a try on the corner by Jenn Sever. The next 10 minutes were a hard battle from both teams, with play remaining in the middle of the field. A penalty right under the uprights gave the All Blues their second score of the game with a put through by Ruth Bryson. The Surfers defense fired up after the penalty, and the next 15 minutes held both teams scoreless. The All Blues showed their ability to capitalize on possession with a few quick rucks off a scrum in the Surfers 22 followed by a quick movement of the ball out to 10 Ruth Bryson, who dotted down in the corner. The Surfers were awarded numerous penalties throughout the first half, but were just unable to put anything on the board. The All Blues ended the half with another score by 6 Tina Nyberg.

The second half started with numerous changeovers in possession. A key scrum on the Surfers 5 meter was awarded to the All Blues, who chose to drive over the line and allow their 8 to dot down. A few minutes later, the Surfers were awarded a penalty in the All Blues 22, and after a few hard crashes by the forwards, were able to swing it out to wing Nia Williams who put the first points for San Diego on the board. Several minutes later found the line of scrimmage within the All Blues 5 meter again. The Surfers held possession, and after being awarded a penalty, a quick crash by prop Liz Henry set the stage for lock Kara Mathews to touch down underneath the uprights. The score was then 10-25. The All Blues were very fired up after this score, and their wing was able to score a few minutes later. The Surfers followed with a try by flyhalf Karmin Macedo, quickly followed by a return score by All Blues flyhalf Ruth Bryson. The last 8 minutes of the match, Berkeley scored 3 additional tries by finding holes in the Surfers defense, resulting in a final score of 15-56 Surfers – All Blues.
