San Diego Surfers Women’s Rugby Clinches USA Rugby Club 7s National Championship

USA Rugby Club 7s National ChampionshipCup

The San Diego Surfers Women’s Rugby Team had one goal at the USA Rugby Club 7s National Championships this year…to win it all. They did so in spectacular fashion, going 6-0 on the weekend and shutting out Old Blue of New York 45-0 to clinch the Cup. Old Blue, a club established a half-century ago, assembled its first ever female team this summer. Led by legendary Eagle Phaidra Knight, the team’s roster was chock full of young, promising college-grade players.

Before the Cup, the Surfers faced the Atlanta Harlequins in the Quarterfinals, blanking them 10-0 to move on to the Semifinals. In the SFs they faced the Berkeley All Blues as they looked for back-to-back 7s National Championships. The All Blues put up a good fight but the Surfers coasted to a 29-14 win, ending the Blues quest for the Cup.

Bowl

In the Bowl Final, the Youngbloodz of Minneapolis met the D.C. Furies. The Furies’ standout player Rhiannon Clark scored the team’s first two tries to take a 12-5 lead, and the Furies didn’t stop as they took the victory 26-17.

Shield

The Bluebonnets defeated the Sacramento Amazons 19-15 to line up another shot against Philadelphia, who they saw earlier in pool play. Philadelphia would prove to be too strong again and easily defeated by the Bluebonnets 31-7.
