Amazons hosted the DC Furies in the second week of WPL conference play this weekend. Both teams came into the match as the winners of their previous matches, and both were looking to continue that trend. The Amazons came out swinging however, and started an early lead. Zarembinski lead the charge, scoring on the first drive off of the kickoff. Braaten followed suit, starting up the scoring for the Amazons back line. While DC took a hard stance on defense, and did great work in the set pieces, the Zons continued to find their way into the try zone. At halftime the score was 40-0, but the Furies, who traveled light with 17 players on the roster, where not ready to back down.
The Zons started the second half with a try in the first 5 minutes by Lundstrum off of a great run. A yellow card also plagued the Furies’ forward pack with their flanker Caitlin Graham leaving the field for a stanza. The Zons took advantage of fresh legs and an overload to short twice before the Furies were up to full strength again. Both teams however were plagued by penalties in the second half, and at this point, they started to catch up with the Zons. With 20 minutes left in the match penalties and missed tackles pushed the Zons back to their own try line, and the Furies drew their first blood of the match with #2 Hana Passen touching down a try. Rhode kicked the conversion to make it 55-7. The Furies kept the momentum after this and were bearing down on the Zons with tough drives, the Zons worked hard to keep them back, but again the Furies broke through and touched another down. This time Rhode scored and kicked the conversion, the score now 55-14. With only 5 minutes left in the match however, time was not on the Furies side. The match ended with a try and conversion by Vonada. Final score: 62-14 Zons take the win!
