National All Star Competition (NASC) at JMU | Jun 2-Jun 6, 2015

The return of the National All Star Competition (NASC) (in a different format) is here! It includes 203 senior, collegiate, and U20 women as USA Rugby works to realign their pathways. They’ve flocked to James Madison University and were divided into four senior, two collegiate, and two U20 teams for a two-game series within each respective age grade.

“Players and coaches are excited to be here and it’s great to see so much talent in one place,” said 15s Head Coach, Pete Steinberg of the event Eagles Head Coach Pete Steinberg said.

To aid the selection process, players have been positioned on teams to compete throughout the week.  Each team is scheduled to compete in at least two matches during the event.

“We want to create equal teams so the competitions are close,” said commented Steinberg of the selection process.  “We don’t know the players that well at the beginning of the cycle, so it has made the process difficult.”

Player performance throughout the week will help representative coaches make selections for various upcoming events.

This competition is mainly being used as a selection venue for the upcoming Women’s Super Series and the 2017 Women’s Rugby World Cup in Ireland. The Super Series includes Canada, USA and New Zealand and will take place June 27 to July 5, 2015 in Alberta, CA. Beyond that the goals are to bring together veteran Eagles with the new up and coming and those that haven’t been “discovered” yet. Scouting for the event has taken place over many months at every USA Rugby event and the various National Recruitment Camps.

Players are not the only attendeesones gaining valuable experience from the event.  The NASC was also designed to help develop coaches, staff, and referees alike.

“We are looking to use the competition structure to develop more elite coaches that can work in an international environment,” said Steinberg.  “We also want to leverage the opportunity to develop support staff managers, trainers, and referees.”

Another NASC event will be held in Chapel Hill, N.C., (N.C.) to accommodate players that could not attend the first current event.  Over More than 100 players not in attendance will be extended an invitation to the later event at University of North Carolina.
