2017 WPL Week 4 – Results & Videos

Week four was the strongest showing yet with over 240 points scored and six teams earning bonus point wins. We’ve also reached the halfway point of the season, Glendale has kept their top spot but there was a shake-up in the red conference as New York bumped the Amazons.

The San Diego Surfers hosted ORSU this week and slotted their first win of the year. ORSU got on the board first with a try from Zoe Wilson but then Surfers’ Kimdinh Tran and Jamila Reinhardt each scored. With 10 minutes left in the match and the score at a tense 28-20, points flowed for both teams but the difference was to great for ORSU to overcome, final score was 42-27.

The Atlanta Harlequins also recorded their first win of the season while the DC Furies still remain winless. The match was tight until the twelfth minute when Atlanta captain Monique Compito crossed the line for an unconverted try. Gussie Maguire scored the lone try for DC while Atlanta piled on another thirty points for a final score of 35-7.

In a recurring theme, Chicago NS recorded their first WPL victory, defeating Berkeley 29-17 at home. NS went up early with fifteen points and Berkeley struggled to match the intensity throughout the match. “The first WPL win felt amazing,” Chicago North Shore captain Lauren Trout enthused. “We talked before the game that we had shown we deserved to be in the WPL. Now it was time to prove that we could win in the WPL.”

In the final match of the week and the highest scoring affair, New York battled the Twin City Amazons to a thrilling 53-41 win. The scoring was opened by Bailey Johnson of Twin Cities and from there it was lead change after lead change. Towards the end of the match, Amazons and USA Rugby Eagle Sylvia Braaten scored a pivotal try to take the lead 41-32. New York brought on some “super subs” and that depth was the difference as three more converted tries were scored.

San Diego Surfers 42 ORSU 27

Atlanta Harlequins 35 DC Furies 7

Chicago NS 29 Berkeley All Blues 17

Twin Cities Amazons 41 New York 53
