The Exeter Chiefs have announced that they are creating a new professional women’s team with a plan to gain admittance into Tyrrell’s Premier 15s ahead of the 2020-2021 season.

Susie Appleby of Glouceseter-Hartpury takes the reins as head coach and will be assisted by Amy Garnett, former England and Saracens player.

Exeter are setting the team up nicely with an initial investment of £500,000 with between £1M and £1.5M if they get into Tyrrell’s.

We’re thinking this will prove to be difficult but not impossible. Starting a new club is always a challenge but they’ve got a healthy investment and a set of ambitious goals. We’ll be watching this club closely as they hit the ground.

Along with the announcement of a new club that will pay players (Exeter Chiefs), several other teams have made similar announcements. Saracens are introducing retainers and matches fees while Worcester will pay may fees. Harlequins do not pay players but offer benefits like accommodation.

This is fantastic news but there is some concern that there is a gap growing between those who pay and those that can’t or don’t have the support of a men’s Premiership side. The concerns also are outside of funding, some clubs are concerned about development for their players.

Steve Hill, the Richmond director of rugby said: “If it becomes a minimum standard to pay your players, whether it is an official minimum standard or it becomes the only way to exist, that is a very different model to when we went into the Tyrrells Premier15s two years ago.”

Chloe Rollie of Scotland speaks to Telegraph UK about her rise in professional rugby. Two years ago she was working on an excavation site where she did either manual labor or dump truck duties.

Now she’s one of the few players on a Scottish contract and also suits up for the Harlequins in Tyrrell’s Premier 15s.

Watching players move from their amateur to professional has been fascinating and we expect more as we’re seeing a major increase in funds for the women’s game.

Alasdair Reid of The Times UK gives us a quick look into Scotland’s efforts around qualifying for the 2021 WRWC. Scotland recently expanded their Autumn Test Series with tests against Wales and Japan in November. They’re already traveling to South Africa from September 30 to October 6.

Scotland has a new coach in place and he will be keen to learn about the squad and make adjustments. Th South Africa tour will be particularly important as it will be a good warmup for the rest of their test matches.

Karthy Dludla was recently selected for South Africa’s matches against Spain and Scotland. South Africa boasts more test matches this year than ever before and their last test match at home was in 2013.

South Africa has struggled with consistent union support and that has affected their 7s players and 15s. They’ve qualified for the 2021 Women’s Rugby World Cup and a for the first time ever, the South Africa stop will include men and women’s for the 2019-2020 HSBC Sevens Series. Will this usher in a new era for South Africa women’s rugby? We hope so and are watching earnestly.

Spain has taken home the first match against South Africa in their 3-tour event, 17-5. Spain used their powerful forwards and strong scrum to seal the win. South Africa played several young players in an effort to expose them to international rugby.

World Rugby has appointed Olympic gold medalist, former International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board Member, and CEO of Sports Innovations Lab’s Angela Ruggiero as an independent member on its Executive Committee.

What a mouthful, but really it means that Ruggiero will serve four years on the committee and they’ll be looking to use her influence and experience to help make decisions.

World Rugby Chairman Sir Bill Beaumont said: “Alongside her strong business acumen and sport governance roles, Angela is perfectly placed to call upon her experiences as an athlete and more recently an athlete representative to advise our strategic direction on crucial areas such as fan engagement, player welfare and growing the global game. In what has been a ground-breaking year for women in rugby with the launch of our ‘Try and Stop Us’ campaign, we are delighted to welcome such an outstanding female leader to help us achieve our mission of a game for all.”

Originally rumors were that they would play Spain and Wales, but now they’ve announced they will only play against Wales on November 10.

France were crowned the 7’s Girls U18 European Champions. On their way to the title, France scored 255 points (41 tries) and only conceded 3 tries. England was runner up and Russia defeated Wales in the third-place match.

The first “RugbyX” tournament will take place in October and offers equal prize money for women’s and men’s teams. The short-format, full contact version is a law trial that will be played on a 55mx32m artificial grass pitch.

Along with the pitch size, quick-tap restarts on the goal line and no conversions make this event unique. Lineouts will be replaced by quick throws and matches will only last 10 minutes.

This is World Rugby’s latest effort to continue building fans of rugby in different formats. Think of touch rugby, beach rugby etc. Will be interesting for sure…
