Pools and schedule announced for Dubai Sevens https://buff.ly/2VN6RPO

The pools and schedules for Dubai 7s on Dec 5-7 have been announced. This is first combined men’s and women’s HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series event of the 2020 season.

This is the second stop on the series for the women and the first for the men. USA took home to gold in Denver and they will face Canada, Russia and Brazil in pool A. Pool B will see Australia, Spain, Ireland and Fiji. Pool C includes New Zealand, France, England and Japan.

Kenya is relishing their return to the Olympics in 2020. While South Africa took the overall Africa Sevens title, their Olympic Committee isn’t allowing them to participate. As a result, Kenya gets a spot at the Olympics as well as a chance at the 2020 Hong Kong 7s to battle for core status on the HSBC Sevens Series.

The Juan Rojas Rugby Stadium in Spain has recently been remodeled and the Spanish women’s team will be one of the first to play in it. They’ll be facing 11th ranked Scotland in January 2020. Spain is ranked 9th and this will be their first big challenge of the new year.

The Occitan Rugby League has scheduled an international match between Occitan (made up of players from Blagnac , Montpellier and Toulouse) and the Spanish women’s team on November 16. This unique match will be a regional team facing a national side at the Ernest-Wallon stadium in Toulouse.

This match will be paired with a men’s match of Occitan vs a Top 14/Pro D2/Federal 1 team.

Danielle Waterman spoke with Talking Rugby Union about visiting Japan with Maggie Alphonsi to see where Liberty Fields got their start. Their trop coincides with the 2019 Men’s Rugby World Cup as well.

“It was unbelievable to get to go to Japan and experience a little bit of Tokyo before the rugby world descended upon it,” Waterman continued. “It is an incredible host nation and to be able to visit Liberty Fields was just, well, quite emotional.”

“We also got to appreciate just what those women were doing because the backdrop was Tokyo and the field was in the middle of nowhere. They made history and I think it was really, really special.”

Newcastle has announced they will be adding a women’s side and will look to join Tyrrells Premier. They join several other established clubs and plant themselves in the middle of a discussion around single side clubs and professionalism.

The semi-finals of the Mitre 10 Farah Palmer Cup have been set. Canterbury will host Counties Manukau and Auckland will meet Wellington.

In the Championship Otago will host Tasman while Hawke’s Bay will play Northland in the second-tier semi-finals after the bottom four teams in the Championship played-off for the final two semi-finals spots.

Week 9 of the WPL resumed after a bye week. Three teams in the East conference were fighting to have a playoff berth.

Beantown won their match against Chicago NS and New York defeated Twin Cities. As the Zons have a bye next week, this means that Beantown and New York are through to playoffs.

In the West, Life West and Glendale maintained their top spots followed by Berkeley, San Diego and ORSU.

The WPL Finals will take place Nov 1-3 in Denver, CO on the Infinity Park Turf Field and can be watched on FloRugby.

The Rugby Europe Women’s Trophy is being hosted by Finland. The opening match of the tournament saw Finland face last year’s champion Czechia. It was a tight affair, ending in a 5-5 draw.

We released our 2019-2020 standings for USA Rugby Senior Club rugby this week. It’s always a bit of trial and error as the landscape is changing and it’s no different this year. Women’s D1 has revamped back to four competitive regions (it was 8 last year) and playoff format is yet to be determined.

This always causes ripples in D2 and we did see a few teams opt out of D1 this year. D2 remains largely the same with 8 competitive regions and playoffs will remain the same.
