2019 officially busiest year for test rugby https://buff.ly/31L34nu

It’s been a big year for women’s test rugby with 60 matches already played and another 15-20 on the horizon. It’s officially the busiest non-World Cup year ever by far. That’s not all though, thirty five nations including two debutantes have played test matches.

A few years ago we were lamenting the death of test rugby (particularly 15s) with a lack of matches. As Scrum Queens notes, one change could be that World Rugby seems to be allowing more matches to shed the “uncapped internationals” label.

Also the launch of official test championships in Africa and (next year) South America has pulled teams back in to test rugby.

USA Rugby has announced a CANAM series (two-match tests) against Canada on November 20 and 24 in southern California. The USA women’s national team has played more games in a 13 month period than was played between the 2014 and 2017 World Cup.

There is some pride on the line as these two teams are tied at 19 wins all-time.

Farah Palmer Premiership Final
Canterbury has claimed their third title in New Zealand’s Farah Palmer Cup. They faced Auckland who was back in the final after a few years off, their last appearance was in 2016.

Canterbury started the match quickly with two converted tries in under 15 minutes. Auckland answered back with a penalty goal and five points a few minutes later. At the half it was 17-10.

The second half was back and forth scoring with several lead changes. Canterbury defense held strong, eventually outlasting Auckland 30-20.

Farah Palmer Championship Final
In the Championship final, Otago narrowly defeated Hawke’s Bay 24-20. Hawke’s Bay led at halftime 8-7 but Otago showed their merit near the end of the match forgoing a penalty goal but instead scoring off a scrum move.

A few squads have been announced for the upcoming Rugby X tournament on October 29, 2019. This brand new, fast paced version of the game is played on a smaller field and they’ve removed line outs, conversions and penalties.

The women’s competition includes England, Ireland, USA and France. Should be interesting as most teams are sending their core 7s players with a few debutantes.

This article had social media buzzing and we found out that lots of fellow ruggers are researching pregnancy and returning to sport. While some view these topics as taboo they potentially affect 50% of the population and more research should be dedicated to the topic.

The article profiles the return of Jade Konkel, Sydney Leroux, Jessica Ennis-Hill Lizzie Diegan and Kara Goucher and their varied routes returning to elite sport.

Dr Amal Hassan, a specialist in pre- and post-natal exercise, believes the subject to be tragically neglected. “People are talking about pelvic health more, but not as much as they’re talking about menstrual health, which is definitely the No 1 health topic in women’s sport at the moment,” she says.

Speaking of research, here is another fascinating article looking at men’s and women’s player’s training and performance using GPS sensors. Dr. Eddie Bradley, a sports scientist at the University of Sunderland, has spent the past three seasons monitoring Tyrrell’s Premier team, DMP Sharks. He collated data from players across 129 Tyrrells Premier 15s matches, analyzing their maximum speed, player loads and the total distance covered on a pitch.

At 4982m, the mean total distance was similar between the forwards and backs, with second-row players covering the most (5297 m) and outside-backs the least (4701 m). While backs covered a significantly greater distance on average at high speed running, the second and back-row covered greater distances jogging.

“There’s a general assumption in rugby that the forwards are going to be slower than the backs, and the backs are going to be faster than the forwards, who will put more work in than the backs,” said Dr Bradley.

“But the differentiation between forwards and backs in the women’s game is a lot smaller. It’s not as pronounced as in the men’s game, where you might get a centre playing down the wing, like Elliot Daly, but you don’t get forwards and backs transferring. It does seem there’s greater similarity across the fifteen players in the women’s game, which means the players can be interchangeable in a way and there’s really good examples of these in the Tyrrells.”

We stumbled across this article about Uganda Rugby and Helen Buteme the other day. It appears that Buteme has submitted her resignation due to lack of continued support in the women’s rugby program. Buteme has been at the helm of Uganda Rugby for a decade and before that was a national player herself.

We’re not in love with this title but the premise of the article is true. Kenya recently qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics while receiving little to no support from their government.

“The sevens and 15s national teams have gone for three major continental and world tournaments without any support from the government.

First, it was during the World Rugby Sevens Series qualifiers in April in Hong Kong where the team reached the semi-finals and the 2021 World Cup Africa qualifier (15s) that was also the Rugby Africa Cup in August this year where the Lionesses finished second behind South Africa.

South Africa beat Kenya Lionesses 39-0 on August 17 at Bosman Stadium, Johannesburg in the Women’s 2021 Rugby World Cup qualifiers.

While Springboks qualified directly for Women’s 2021 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, Kenya got a second chance to qualify for finishing second in the four-nation qualifier.”
