Huge women’s rugby stories this week and we’re covering Spain’s defeat of Wales, England outlasts France, and Wales defeats Ireland. South Africa has been chosen to host the 2022 7s Rugby World Cup and Fiji and China both qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

4,200 attendees watched Spain defeat Wales 29-5. Spain’s result moves them ahead of Wales in the World Rugby Rankings. Wales captain Carys Phillips gained her 50th cap and shared the spotlight with eight debutants.

The Spain fixture was the first of four matches this November for Wales with matches against Scotland, Ireland and the Barbarians Women to come over the next few weeks.

France hosted England at the Stade Marcel-Michelin in front of 13,700 spectators. England came away with the win and it’s their first on French soil since 2012. Another way to look at this match was professional vs semi-professional. England has a full roster of players on contract while France only has a few.

USA and Canada have named their squads ahead of the Can-AM two-game series in Chula Vista, CA on November 20 and 24. These teams last faced each other at the 2018 Super Series where USA upset Canada. Both groups are bringing experienced squads with a few potential debutantes. Make sure to watch on FloRugby.

Switzerland is preparing for their match against Czech Republic on November 16 for the Rugby Europe Women’s Trophy. The Swiss have redeveloped their Swiss Women’s XVs team after the Rugby Europe Women’s Trophy was re-created.

In a tight affair, Ireland led Wales 13-10 with under ten minutes to go. A last second try from Wales scrum half Keira Bevan at the 83rd minute put the win in the Welsh camp. Wales bounced back from their loss against Spain to take this match 15-13.

Wales next faces Scotland on November 17.

Ireland will be looking towards the 2020 Six Nations.

Scotland failed to qualify for the last two Rugby World Cups and new head coach Philip Doyle is determined to change that. Having come off a 2-0 affair against in South Africa, Doyle is now looking forward to a match against Wales on November 17 match followed by a home match against Japan on November 24.

Papua New Guinea is also searching for their chance to qualify for the 2021 WRWC. Their journey begins at the upcoming Oceania Rugby Championships in Fiji. They need to finish second against Fiji, Samoa and Tonga. If not, they have another shot in the global repechage for a second chance.

NIRA National Semi-finals took place over the weekend and now we know the matchups for the Championships next weekend.

South Africa will host the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens at Cape Town Stadium. This is the first time that Rugby World Cup Sevens has been hosted on the African continent. 

The world’s best 24 men’s and 16 women’s rugby sevens teams will take to the field at the Cape Town Stadium in Green Point where they will compete for world champion status over three days of exhilarating action.

Australia took the overall Oceania 7s title defeating New Zealand 12-0. This was to be expected but the real drama was in the quarterfinals. Fiji became the ninth women’s team to confirm their place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after defeating Papua New Guinea 36-0. Fiji fell to Australia 24-12 in the semi-finals but they had done what they came to do.

Brazil’s women were crowned champions of the 2019 Valentín Martínez in Montevideo. In doing so they furthered their long-standing supremacy in Sudamérica Women’s competition by winning the South American women’s title for the 17th time.

The title came by completing a 19-10 win over Argentina in the final. Coming in third was Colombia who are to face Argentina in a qualifying series to determine who will compete in next year’s world Sevens Women’s circuit.

China became Asia’s second representative at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after an emphatic victory over Hong Kong in the final of the Asia Rugby 7s in Guangzhou.

China did not feature in Rio when rugby sevens made its debut in Brazil but they can now look forward to challenging the best teams in the world on sport’s greatest stage after an impressive display not only in the final but throughout the two days of competition.

France beat Ireland 26-19 to take the Elche 7s title. This tournament serves mainly as a warmup to Dubai 7s, attending teams were Belgium, France, Ireland, Poland and Spain.
