Under the Posts – Feb 10-16 starts with our coverage of XVs including England ripping Scotland 53-0 in a makeup Six Nations match, Fiji defeated Super W’s Queensland 29-10 and Asia has postponed the 2021 WRWC Qualifiers due to the Coronavirus. We also take a look the solo Tyrrell’s Premier matches as well as Club and College rugby in the US.

In 7s news, it was revealed that the Olympic repechage will be June 20-21 in Dublin, World Rugby releases the details of a standalone Women’s World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series and Hong Kong postpones their 7s tournament due to the Coronavirus.

Misc news highlights Catherine Spencer’s best-selling book, rugby in Kosovo and all the podcasts from the week.

Six Nations

England coasted to a 53-0 win over the hosts. The video and photos from the events were unreal…Storm Clara was showing her wrath and the players looked miserable.

Queensland had a bye for the first week of their local competition, Super W. Fiji will now face the Waratahs on Friday, February 21. https://twitter.com/yscrugby/status/1228136963519238145 The Asian 2021 Women’s Rugby World Cup Qualifier was originally scheduled to be in mid-March but looking into the future (we can do that…), it was announced on February 18 that it was being postponed due to the ongoing Coronavirus. The event will now kick-off as late as May with many details still tentative.

League Results & Updates

Australia’s Super W returned this past weekend and 2020 was opened with wins by the Waratahs and Brumbies. The Brumbies started out the weekend and they rushed past RugbyWA 29-10 while Melbourne struggled to get going and eventually losing to the Waratahs 33-3.

All teams will be back  in action this weekend.

Just one game for Tyrrell’s Premier this week as Richmond hosted the Saracens. Richmond could only muster one converted try to Saracens 42 points.

With this win the Saracens move back to the top of the table but with only a two point lead over the Harlequins it remains a close battle. 

The league will again go on an extended break until March 21 once the Six Nations is over.

The Olympic Repechage sounds like it will be in Dublin on June 20-21. Ireland reportedly won the hosting gig over Biarritz, Monaco and Moscow.

Ellia Green shocked everyone when she posted a photo of herself in the hospital. Does this mean she’s out for the rest of the season and the Olympics? Australia says no,

“The ankle surgery was a general clean-up, and the expectation is while Green may miss tournaments in the next month or two as she rehabs, the 173 days before the start of the Aussie women’s title defence begins at the Tokyo Olympics should be more than enough to see the star flyer back on her feet and scoring tries.”

World Rugby first announced their new Sevens Challenger Series last month and only released details about the men’s events. We now finally have the details for a solo event (I guess ignore the Series branding? for now…) taking place in Stellenbosch, South Africa on March 28-29. 

The 12 teams taking place in the inaugural event include Argentina, Belgium, China, Colombia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Poland, Scotland and hosts South Africa.

 

Even rugby events aren’t immune to the Coronavirus and Hong Kong Sevens has been postponed. The event has always been held in April but will move to October in the hopes that the virus will be contained.

The organization ‘Girls Rugby’ has been awarded a ‘Women Win International Exchange’ to Brazil in partnership with Empodera. This exchange program will be funded by the U.S. Department of State and will fund twelve (12) participants from the United States to travel to Brazil March 8th-14th and twelve (12) participants from Brazil to travel to the US May 2nd-10th. 

“Girls Rugby is excited to participate in this exchange program with the U.S. Department of State, Women Win, and Empodera. Our mission is to empower girls to reach their potential through sport and to participate in an exchange that centers on female empowerment is truly an honor. We are working to build a great curriculum for both sides of the exchange to ensure participants make the most of their experience, which will include partnerships with other sport organizations in Brazil and the United States.” Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder, Erin Kennedy
