In 7s news, the details around the women’s HSBC World Rugby Challenger Series have been released. The tournament will take place March 28-29 in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

Lots of misc news this week including the announcement of the World Rugby Executive Leaderships Scholarships. 10 have been announced with two more to come from Asia Rugby. Lydia Furse shares an amazing article on how sport impacted the lives of many women in South Wales during the First World War.

Colombia faced Brazil in a Women’s Rugby World Cup 2021 Qualifier this past weekend. This was a winner-takes-all match and Colombia came out on top 23-19. 

Colombia will now face Kenya in a Women’s Rugby World Cup repechage fixture. The winner of Kenya vs Colombia fixture will join one team from each of Europe, Oceania and Asia in the repechage tournament.

On April 4, reigning All Ireland League Champions Railway Union RFC will take on fellow Dubliners Suttonians at Park Avenue. They are looking to set the national record for the largest attendance at a women’s club rugby game in Ireland – EVER.

The Rugby Breakdown wrote a feature on the Sacramento Amazons a few weeks ago and we wanted to feature it. The Amazons won the 2019 DII USA Rugby National Championship and even with big turnover, they’re hoping to be there again this year.

Round 4 only had one match where we saw England dismantle Wales 66-7. Scotland vs France and Ireland vs Italy were both postponed due to the ongoing Coronavirus virus. In particular a Scottish player has tested positive for the virus and in an abundance of caution they postponed the match and most players and coaches are self-quarantining. 

Round 5 has also been affected with Italy vs England postponed as well. No word on if Wales vs Scotland will be played…

World Rugby has confirmed details around an Inaugural HSBC Sevens Challenger Series event for the women. The tournament will take place at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch, South Africa on March 28-29, 2020. 

This is a standalone event that replaces a similar tournament but the winner gains core team status on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2021.

The nations who will compete in Stellenbosch are Argentina, Belgium, China, Colombia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Poland, Scotland and hosts South Africa.

Asia will announce two 2020 scholarships along with an additional two scholarships having deferred their allocation from 2019, at a later stage this year.

Ireland hosted LiveWIRe: Women In Rugby conference on March 8. As well as hosting this one-of-a-kind event, they announced a Women In Rugby Leadership Program. A three-day course will take place May 14-16 and 30 places have been made available.
