Commemorating Juneteenth – Donate, Sign and Educate

For the first time, YSC Rugby will be commemorating June 19, or Juneteenth. To be honest we learned about this holiday last year when our local gym closed to commemorate the day. I was shocked when I put the query into a search engine and began to learn about the history of this day. I wasn’t taught about Juneteenth, Freedom Day or Emancipation day in school.

Donate

Today we’re doing more than just posting about Juneteenth. To start, we’re donating to the Equal Justice Initiative. This organization is working to end mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the U.S., challenging racial and economic injustice, and protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society.

We urge you to join us if you’re able or you can view this recommended list of prison reform organizations to choose your own.

Sign

Second, we’ve signed the Change.org petition to make Juneteenth a National Holiday in the US. As of publication there are almost 400,000 signers, join us!

Educate

Last but not least, we also urge you to join a special panel of rugby influencers (Phaidra Knight, Tosan Tutse-Tonwe, Koma Gandy Fischbein, Akinola Raymond, Kyle & Tiana Granby and Gift Egbelu) from the African American Community commemorating Juneteenth, TONIGHT at 7pm EST. They’ll be discussing rugby and culture from the African American perspective. Join the discussion on the HBCU Rugby Classic page.
