The 2024 WXV competition promises to be an exhilarating showcase of the world’s top women’s rugby teams, all with an eye on the 2025 Rugby World Cup. Held across three weekends from September 27 to October 12, the tournament will take place in Vancouver, South Africa, and Dubai. These crucial matches will determine the final two spots for the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025. See who else has already qualified for the 2025 RWC here and see how teams qualified for the WXV here.

The reigning WXV 1 champions, England, will be defending their title in Vancouver. The competition will kick off with a triple-header at BC Place, where England will face the USA, and host Canada will take on France. With Ireland joining the top level after a stellar performance in the Six Nations, the pool promises thrilling matchups, culminating in a showdown between England and Canada on the final day. The cross-pool format will again be used, ensuring a mix of familiar and fresh encounters as the top Six Nations teams compete against the leading Pacific Fours teams.

In WXV 2, hosted in South Africa, the competition is equally fierce. South Africa will leverage their home advantage, opening against Japan. The inclusion of Australia and Wales, who are making their debut in this tier, adds excitement as they compete against Italy and Scotland, respectively. The final match between Australia and Scotland is expected to be a highlight between the 5th and 6th ranked teams (as of this publication).

Dubai will host WXV 3, where the focus is on securing the last two spots for the World Cup. Spain, Fiji, the Netherlands, Hong Kong China, Samoa, and Madagascar will battle it out in this tier. With Fiji already qualified, the remaining teams will vie for the final positions. The cross-pool format in WXV 3 ensures competitive balance and thrilling encounters, with Spain and the Netherlands looking strong but facing unpredictable opponents like Madagascar and Samoa.

This second edition of WXV is not only a crucial milestone on the road to the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 but also a significant event in the global rugby calendar. The competition aims to increase the profile and participation of women’s rugby, providing more competitive matches, greater visibility, and increased investment in the sport. Fans are encouraged to secure their tickets early to witness this landmark tournament, which promises to deliver unforgettable moments and high-stakes action.

Format

The three-tier WXV tournament was created to provide consistent annual international fixtures outside of Rugby World Cup years. Each tier has six teams that qualified through continental tournaments and play-offs. See how teams qualified for the WXV here.

Teams are split into two pools within each tier, and they’ll face the three teams from the opposite pool. Points are awarded as follows: four for a win, two for a draw, and bonus points for scoring four tries or losing by seven points or fewer.
