Sydney Martichuski’s journey into the world of rugby is a story of resilience, rediscovery, and embracing new challenges. Hailing from Golden Valley, Minnesota, Sydney’s athletic background is as diverse as it is impressive. She began her sports journey at a young age, engaging in gymnastics, soccer, basketball, hockey, and volleyball. Of these, hockey and volleyball stood out, with hockey becoming her favorite sport, followed closely by lacrosse, which she later picked up in high school.
Sports provided Sydney with more than just physical activity—they became a vital outlet for her energy and a way to forge meaningful connections. The discipline, competitiveness, and sense of community she found in sports became deeply ingrained in her identity. After high school, Sydney felt a void when she no longer had a team to play for, which led her to walk onto the lacrosse team at the University of Minnesota during her senior year. That year, she rediscovered the fulfillment that comes from being part of a team.
After graduating, Sydney once again felt the absence of competitive sports in her life. It wasn’t until August 2023 that she discovered rugby, a sport that would reignite her competitive spirit and provide her with the challenges she craved. Despite being new to the sport, Sydney’s dedication and athletic background quickly propelled her to new heights. Just nine months after picking up a rugby ball for the first time, she found herself playing in her first Women’s Premier League (WPL) match in New York—a remarkable achievement for someone so new to the game.
Sydney’s training regimen reflects her commitment to excellence. As a Strength and Conditioning Coach, she already had a solid foundation, but rugby brought new dimensions to her training. Her weekly routine includes multiple strength and conditioning sessions, field/sprint sessions, and additional cardio sessions. She also emphasizes the importance of mental fitness, regularly checking in with herself and seeking professional or personal support when needed.
Preparation for competition is a meticulous process for Sydney, beginning early in the week and intensifying the day before a match. She focuses on mobility, light cardio, and strategic carb-loading to ensure her body is primed for peak performance. Mentally, Sydney prepares by setting specific goals, watching film, and getting into the right mindset through music and team pep talks.
One of the biggest challenges Sydney faced in her athletic journey was overcoming health issues that left her physically and mentally depleted. At one point, she found herself unable to leave her house or engage in physical activity. However, rugby became the catalyst for her recovery, providing an inclusive environment where she could rebuild herself and regain her confidence. The sport allowed her to show up as she was, embracing her vulnerabilities and pushing past her physical barriers.
Sydney’s story is one of perseverance and determination. Her first WPL match in New York stands out as a particularly memorable moment—playing in a top-level competition less than a year after discovering rugby is a testament to her dedication and natural athleticism. Balancing her athletic pursuits with her career as a Strength and Conditioning Coach, Sydney has created a life that fulfills her passion for sports and personal growth.
Looking ahead, Sydney has ambitious goals. She dreams of playing rugby professionally, both in the United States and potentially overseas. She is actively working toward these goals by watching and learning from experienced players, building connections within the rugby community, and continually refining her skills.
After her playing days are over, Sydney envisions continuing her involvement in sports through strength and conditioning coaching, with aspirations to expand her business and work with elite-level teams. Her journey is far from over, and with her drive and determination, there’s no doubt that Sydney Martichuski will continue to make an impact both on and off the rugby field.
