OBH’s rugby journey began in their freshman year of high school when a friend from the soccer team suggested they check out rugby together. From that first practice, OBH was hooked and hasn’t looked back since. What has kept them on the pitch all these years is the joy they find in the game and the bonds they’ve built with their teammates.
OBH’s rugby career has taken them to incredible places. After college, she had the opportunity to play 7s in Australia and 15s in New Zealand. These experiences were made possible by the support of their community, and OBH remains deeply grateful for the chance to learn from diverse coaching styles and play in new environments.
Balancing commitments on and off the field, OBH maintains a structured training regimen. During the WPL season, she practices 2-3 times a week and incorporates strength and conditioning on her own. They prioritize rest and recovery, making sure to stretch, include prehab in workouts, and take care of their body by investing in treatments. Mentally, OBH finds it essential to stay connected to other interests, like watching Love Island, playing board games, and following the WNBA, to avoid burnout.
Pre-game, OBH prefers a calm, “think off” approach, ensuring they’re well-nourished and hydrated. She focuses on having fun with friends rather than overthinking the stakes. It’s this laid-back attitude that has helped them enjoy the game while excelling on the pitch.
One of the most challenging experiences OBH faced was tearing their Achilles in 2022. It was a tough, long road to recovery, but they credit their teammates and community for keeping them motivated. Celebrating each small milestone—whether it was bearing weight on their leg or hopping on one foot again—helped them stay positive and determined to return to the game.
A standout moment in OBH’s career was playing with the Golden State Retrievers at PayPal Park. They had never imagined that they would get the chance to play on such a stage in front of friends, family, and future rugby players from their hometown.
Balancing rugby with their career as an analyst for a permanent supportive housing program requires careful time management. OBH relies on their Google Calendar to ensure they are intentional with their time, particularly when things get busy. When facing setbacks, she focuses on what’s next and on what she can do to improve and return to the game stronger.
OBH encourages young athletes to keep playing other sports. They believe that the dynamic nature of rugby benefits from the skills and body awareness developed in different sports. Her short-term goal is to win the WPL Championship, while their long-term goal is to continue playing the best rugby they can while having fun.
Looking ahead, OBH hopes to see the professionalization of women’s rugby coincide with expanded opportunities for players of all levels. Beyond rugby, she dreams of immersing herself in local farmers’ markets, combining their love for cooking with a more sustainable lifestyle.
OBH’s journey is a testament to resilience, community, and the pure joy of playing the sport they love.
