We’re excited to continue our series, “Pioneers of the Pitch,” where we celebrate the groundbreaking athletes, administrators, coaches, referees, and fans making their mark on rugby in the USA. Each installment takes you on a journey through the inspiring stories of rising stars and seasoned legends, both on and off the field. Whether honoring their contributions during their lifetime or posthumously, we shine a light on these exceptional individuals and uncover their tales of dedication, passion, and triumph.
Maddie Miller’s rugby journey took off during her final semester of college, just as she was winding down her collegiate soccer career. With her schedule wide open and a competitive spirit still buzzing, she found herself drawn to the pitch when a friend invited her to rugby practice. From that moment on, rugby became more than just a sport—it was a community, an exciting challenge, and soon, a passion that would shape her path forward. Now in Detroit, Maddie plays for Detroit Rugby Football Club, where she also leads as a player-coach, social media and marketing chair, and a key influence in driving the club’s mission.
Throughout her journey, Maddie has embodied the values of dedication and collaboration, making a profound impact at every level of the sport. Her love for rugby goes hand-in-hand with her passion for design and marketing. As the founder of Rugbee.co, Maddie has taken her creative skills and applied them to the world of rugby, helping clubs across the country with online fundraiser stores to support their growth. Maddie’s goal with Rugbee is not only to help teams financially but also to contribute to rugby’s expansion and visibility, one store at a time.
As the social media and marketing chair for Detroit Rugby, Maddie wears multiple hats, balancing team needs with her innovative ideas. From organizing recruitment events to managing game-day graphics, her influence is woven into every part of the club’s outreach. Her background in design also means she’s adept at crafting visuals that capture the spirit and camaraderie of her team.
This season, Maddie has also taken on the role of Player-Coach for Detroit Women’s+ Rugby team. The transition from player to coach has come with its own set of challenges, but Maddie approaches each one with positivity and resilience. Leading the team as a player-coach has strengthened her appreciation for teamwork, as her WRCRA network and the support of her teammates have made the journey both fulfilling and exciting. Maddie’s coaching style emphasizes fitness and offensive strategy, encouraging players to understand the game’s bigger picture rather than simply reacting to the immediate play. She credits the rookies and veterans alike for enriching each practice and game, making the team stronger together.
Maddie’s story is one of passion, growth, and community. Her dedication to rugby extends beyond the field, and whether she’s coaching, designing, or running a fundraiser, Maddie is committed to supporting the next generation of players. Through her tireless work and boundless enthusiasm, she’s paving the way for a stronger rugby community, inspiring athletes, and proving that with creativity and teamwork, anything is possible.
