The HSBC SVNS series heads to Cape Town on December 7-8, following Australia’s stunning fifth consecutive title win in Dubai. New Zealand finished strong in second place, while France clinched third, showcasing the fierce competition in the women’s series as teams battle for early dominance.
This year’s HSBC SVNS features the top 12 men’s and women’s teams battling across seven global locations over seven months. New Zealand’s women, reigning Olympic champions, are chasing the SVNS title they lost to Australia in 2024, making every match critical in their campaign.
New Format Debuts in Cape Town
Cape Town marks the debut of an exciting new competition format that raises the stakes for every match. Teams are divided into four pools of three, with only the pool winners earning a coveted spot in the semi-finals. Second-place finishers will battle for fifth to eighth place, while those finishing third face off for ninth to twelfth.
This streamlined format means there’s no room for error—every result counts, and the pressure to deliver is relentless. The new structure promises intense competition as teams fight to stay in contention and avoid being left behind.

What’s at Stake
The 2025 HSBC SVNS season will build toward a dramatic finish in Los Angeles at Dignity Health Sports Park, the venue for the LA 2028 Olympic rugby sevens competition. After six regular-season stops—Dubai, Cape Town, Perth, Vancouver, Hong Kong, and Singapore—the top eight teams based on cumulative series points will advance to the HSBC SVNS World Championship, where the men’s and women’s champions will be crowned in a high-stakes, winner-takes-all showdown.
But that’s not the only battle happening in LA. The bottom four teams (9th-12th) will enter the high-stakes promotion and relegation playoff, facing the top four teams from the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series. Only the best will secure their place in the next HSBC SVNS season, making every match in LA a fight for survival.
