The stakes for the HSBC SVNS World Championship have reached a fever pitch following an intense weekend at Estadio Charrúa in Montevideo. With the second leg of the SVNS 2 series now in the books, the field is narrowing. The action moves immediately to Sao Paulo this weekend, March 28 and 29, for the final stop before the postseason cutoff. The performance in Uruguay has officially separated the certainties from the hopefuls heading into this decisive Brazilian showdown.
Argentina Dominates, Chasers Secure Their Spots
Las Yaguaretés have proven that their promotion from SVNS 3 was no fluke. By winning four of their five matches in Montevideo, Argentina claimed back-to-back titles and became the first women’s team to officially punch their ticket to the HSBC SVNS World Championship Series.
They didn’t have it easy, though. Argentina had to survive two golden point thrillers on day one and a gritty 14-12 comeback against Spain. However, they saved their best for the final, defeating South Africa 22-10 thanks to clinical second-half tries from Talia Rodich, Candela Delgado, and Marianela Escalante.
Despite the loss in the final, South Africa and Spain have also done enough to secure their qualification. These three teams are now guaranteed a spot in the high-stakes promotion tournament spanning Hong Kong, Valladolid, and Bordeaux.
The Final Qualifying Spot: China vs. The Field
While the top three are safe, the battle for the fourth and final qualification slot is coming down to the wire. China currently holds that precious fourth position after a vital 22-15 win over Brazil, fueled by a first-half hat trick from Qian Xin.
However, they can’t afford to relax heading into the final regular-season stop in Sao Paulo this weekend. Both Brazil and Kenya are still mathematically in the hunt. Brazil managed to salvage some momentum on home soil by beating Kenya 19-12, a result that keeps their dreams of reaching the World Championship alive, even if they remain the underdogs in the standings.
The Road Ahead: World Championships
The mission in Sao Paulo is simple: finish in the top four of the overall SVNS 2 standings to advance to the World Championship series.
With the primary HSBC SVNS 1 season now complete following the New York finale, the core teams waiting in the promotion-relegation playoff are confirmed. The four successful teams from SVNS 2 will advance to face Canada, Fiji, Japan, and Great Britain, who are the bottom four finishers from the SVSN 1 tier.
This crossover is a “winner takes all” battle for survival. The results in Hong Kong, Valladolid, and Bordeaux will determine which programs earn core status for the 2027 season and which will be relegated.
