We’re excited to continue our series, “Pioneers of the Pitch,” where we celebrate the groundbreaking athletes, administrators, coaches, referees, and fans making their mark on rugby in the USA. Each installment takes you on a journey through the inspiring stories of rising stars and seasoned legends, both on and off the field. Whether honoring their contributions during their lifetime or posthumously, we shine a light on these exceptional individuals and uncover their tales of dedication, passion, and triumph.
Kat Roche’s rugby journey has been marked by firsts and a commitment to continual growth, bringing her from player to referee, referee coach and administrator. Her path has been anything but conventional, but each role has reinforced her dedication to the sport she loves.
Kat first discovered rugby in high school, where the welcoming and supportive environment hooked her. Her time playing for Unionville High School and then North Carolina State University was instrumental in building her foundation in the game. She thrived in rugby’s unique community, which allowed players to learn and grow without fear of mistakes. This positive start ultimately inspired her to pursue refereeing, initially as a way to improve her game knowledge as a player. Her interest quickly deepened, and she found herself drawn to the unique challenges and opportunities that officiating presented.
Kat’s officiating journey began in the Southeast Rugby Referee Society (SERRS) before she moved and continued her development within the Texas Rugby Referee Association (TRRA). The excitement of making on-the-spot calls and the challenge of maintaining the game’s integrity kept her motivated through every local match. Each whistle pushed her to improve, building the confidence that fueled her rapid ambition.
This dedication led to a historic milestone early in her career when she debuted as Major League Rugby’s (MLR) first female lead referee. This breakthrough in the professional men’s 15s game showcased her ability to manage high-pressure environments and served as a springboard for her international aspirations.
Reflecting on her journey, Kat’s progression is rooted in her acceptance that mistakes are part of the process. Her commitment to learning led to a remarkable career on the world circuit, where she has now officiated eight HSBC SVNS Cup Finals. This sustained excellence at the highest level of sevens, combined with her professional 15s experience, paved the way for her first international test match and a fast-paced ascent through the global ranks.
Taking the whistle in high-profile events has brought its share of challenges and triumphs, culminating in her selection to referee the Women’s Olympic Rugby Final at Paris 2024. This historic achievement solidified her status as a trailblazer for American referees. Following the Olympics, she continued her elite trajectory as a primary referee for Rugby World Cup 2025 in England, including a prestigious appointment to the semi-final between France and England.
While her on-field achievements are public-facing, Kat remains an influential leader in the sport’s infrastructure. She has transitioned away from her previous administrative roles within the Texas Rugby Union (TRU), but her impact there was foundational. In her capacity as an administrator, Kat managed training, education, and operations for the TRRA. She streamlined processes, led training sessions, and managed the often-overwhelming flow of communications and feedback that comes with the territory.
Today, she continues her love of the game by writing periodic summaries for the USA Club Competitions Committee (CCC) covering every Union and their various divisions. Her experience behind the scenes has taught her a vital lesson: you can’t do it all alone. She stays dedicated to building a supportive environment and encourages others in rugby administration to surround themselves with a strong team.
From her early days in SERRS to the Olympic final and the committee room, Kat’s journey embodies resilience and an unwavering commitment to the sport she loves.
