The women’s competition in Sri Lanka served notice of the increasing competitiveness across the region. Having represented the continent at the Olympics, Japan’s women started with two easy pool wins but came untuck against Thailand.
Thailand themselves then lost to China in one semi final, after Japan had overcome Hong Kong. Thailand then beat Hong Kong 19-5 to finish a highest ever third place before Japan over-powered China 17-5 to rubber-stamp their series defence.
