WANTED: Doing a Rugby Research Paper! Can you Recommend any Books?

Two WANTED ads in one day, this has never been heard of!

My name is Emily and I currently play rugby for UNI. I just joined this year and I wanted to know more about the sport. So I’ve decided to use rugby as the topic for my research paper. Our library is limited to the number of books we have about the origins of rugby, so if you know of any good books or other sources I could use please let me know if you have time. Thanks you for taking the time to read this email.

Sincerely,
Emily C.

Update from Emily: I’m looking for the history, origins, and traditions of rugby for my research paper.

Update from Emily (3/30/2009):

Wendy,
I just wanted to say thank you for your help with my paper. I got an A- on it! Thanks agian!
Emily C.

  1. Lots of great responses from Facebook:

    David W.:
2 books that might help.. 1. Playing the Enemy : Nelson Mandela and the Game that made a Nation. by John Carlin. 2 . Rugby’s Strangest Matches: Extraordinary but true Stories of a Century of Rugby. by John Griffiths.

    Jori T.:
Go Forward, Support!: The Rugby of Life by Rosemary A. Schmidt

    Sheri H.:
Rugby Coaching the NZ way A must for all coaches and players by Rodney Butt
Rugby A Players Guide to the Laws Derek Robinson
Rugby Skill, Tactics and Rules Rony Williams and Gordon Hunter

Mark C.: I like Rugby SAQ.

I also like the rugby scene at the start of the film “Four Feathers” with Heath Ledger….

  2. Another recommendation:

Brett M.: “I don’t know if you are still working on your project, but you need to look at Jim Greenwood’s Total Rugby and Think Rugby – they are the bibles for coaches and players. I also recommend a book called The Winter Game by Todd Nicholls -good luck!”

  3. I’d recommend “A Game for Hooligans: The History of Rugby Union” by Huw Richards. A lot of it is just lists of male UK players, but there’s some really solid info in it, especially about rugby origins.
