Kenyan Women’s Rugby Team Captain Aberdeen Shikoyi Passes on

from Kawowo Sports News:

The Kenyan Rugby Union (KRU) has released a statement confirming the death of their Women’s captain Aberdeen Shikoyi. The skipper spent the whole of last week in a Nairobi hospital after suffering a nasty spinal cord injury in the Uganda versus Kenya first leg of Elgon Cup last Saturday in Kampala and was rushed immediately to hospital.

The statement from the KRU read, “The KRU confirms the death of Aberdeen Shikoyi. We and the entire rugby fraternity are thankful for her service, dedication and leadership offered to the game of rugby and is saddened by her passing on. We also pay tribute to Uganda Rugby Union and the medical teams in Uganda and Kenya who ensured that she received the best medical treatment possible”.

Her last game was a 15-6 loss to Uganda though the Lioness beat Uganda 15-3 to win the Elgon Cup 21-18 on aggregate. Her body is at Umash Funeral Home as KRU board members and family meet tomorrow Monday to begin preparations for her burial. It is said that her body will be laid to rest at her ancestral home in Kakamega. She was both the captain of the national side and her club Mwamba Invaders. May Her Soul Rest in Eternal Peace.

The thoughts and prayers of YSC are with the player’s family, teammates and friends during this tragic time.
