Why women’s rugby in Wales is more popular than ever before

Wales Women's RugbyWRU national women’s rugby manager Caroline Spanton says Wales is reflecting a worldwide boom in women playing the game.

Performance hubs report they are “inundated” at trials and there are now five divisions compared to two a decade ago while new women’s clubs have opened.

“There is definite growth and the more we get girls playing the more people will realise what a good sport it is for values, loyalty, self-esteem and teamwork,” she says.

Gwesyn Price-Jones, co-ordinator of women’s and girls regional sides and female development, says the last four years have seen a huge rise in numbers playing.

Gwesyn, who co-ordinates five WRU rugby hubs for girls aged nine to 15, believes the success of the Wales national men and women’s teams had inspired girls and women to play.
