Women’s Rugby: Halton Women Remain Unbeaten after Bradford Battle

Bradford Dudley Hill 16 Halton 20

HALTON Women and Girls ran out winners in the tussle of two unbeaten sides at Dudley Hill.

The game also marked the first ever meeting between the Halton and Bradford-based clubs.

Halton wasted little time after kick off, demonstrating quick hands and strong running from the outset.

Kathy McMullin’s side took a six-point advantage on five minutes courtesy of a Gemma Stanley try, converted by Gemma Hennessey.

Halton had to wait until just before half time to add to their early lead, when youngster Chloe Durkin bagged her first ever try to give her side a 10-0 half time lead, after collecting a cross-field kick from the influential Hennessey.

Dudley showed their mettle, going over for an early second half four-pointer.

However, Naomi Williams responded with a try of her own to extend Halton’s lead.

The hosts, showing exactly why they had been unbeaten so far, were undeterred and continued to attack up the middle of the field, scoring another two tries and a conversion to level the scores at 14-14.

But Stanley added her second try of the game on her way to landing the player of the match award, before the reliable Hennessey converted to confirm a 20-14 victory and to maintain Halton’s unbeaten run.

Halton went on a second away trip, travelling to Leeds to face Stanningley.

However, the game was called off an hour before kick-off, with the home side conceding the tie.

Halton host York side, New Earswick at the Parklands Club, Chapel Lane, Widnes, on Sunday (2pm ko).

Halton have also recently started an all female boxing and fitness training session on Monday nights at 7.15pm, in joint partnership with Jackie Ryan.

The classes, which cost £2, are held at the Stobart Stadium Halton. Anyone interested can attend.
