South Africa return home to continue their preparations for Women’s Rugby World Cup 2010 buoyed by an emphatic 38-0 victory over Kazakhstan at Al Ain Rugby Club in Dubai at the weekend to clinch the two-test series.

The South Africans had edged the first encounter 22-17 to record a first ever away Test victory, although they had to fight back from 17-5 down against Asia’s leading side who used their forwards to dominate early on.

It was a different story when the sides came face to face again two days later with South Africa coach Denver Wannies’ change of tactics rewarded with one of the side’s best ever performances.

“We came here with the idea to give some new players the opportunity to play at Test level and in that respect we achieved our goal,” admitted Wannies, who handed three players their international debuts in the series.

“I am pleased with the performance of newcomers Nadene Botha at loosehead and Zena Jordaan showed great promised at fly half.

“The matches gave us a great opportunity to test our progress and our readiness and we will continue to work so we can be ready for the World Cup in August.”

South Africa captain and flanker Mandisa Williams led a renewed forward effort which denied their more experienced and heavier opponents any sort of momentum with back row Lamla Momoti scoring two of her side’s five tries.

Ziyanda Taweleni – one of the new caps blooded by Wannies – opened the scoring with Zena Jordan, Momoti and Phameza Gadu all then crossing the whitewash in the second half of an impressive display.

Jordan, playing in only her second international, was switched from centre to fly half for the second test and made a big impact with her judgement and distribution keeping South Africa on the front foot with her try a just reward for the display.

South Africa will have two more training camps before they travel to Scotland for another two-match series in June as they step up preparations for Women’s Rugby World Cup 2010, which runs from 20 August to 5 September.

Wannies’ charges have been handed a tough draw for their second Women’s Rugby World Cup appearance with three-time defending champions New Zealand, RWC Sevens winners Australia and Wales their opponents in Pool A.
