WPL Preview: Berkeley All Blues vs San Francisco Fog from Rucking Insurance, Kevin Sullivan

The first scrum of the match resulted in a try for the All Blues.  A sunny Saturday on Treasure featured a pre-season hit out between the Berkeley All Blues, and the San Francisco Fog Ladies.  Big numbers vs raw experience was the theme for the 3 20minute sets.

In all, the WPL side put down 10 tries to none.  IMHO, 5 or 6 more should have been dotted down, but, a bit of white-line fever ensued, and the usual polished finishing of the ABs gathered some rust.  I have no doubt Coaches Flores and Sparks will sort that out before their opening WPL match in DC against the Furies.

The Fog Ladies new Coach, Ben N., fielded a set of raw rookies that looked to have already grasped rugby’s basics.  That bodes well for their upcoming season, as this year they’ll do double duty up in Seattle in a few weeks time, and they have a must-win with local Norcal Triple Threat.

The match was mostly contained between the 15m hash lines.  The ABs looked to punch up the right side, weak side, of each scrum.  The Fog struggled with possession, but their brightest spot came when they got the ball to their wing.  It was a good 40m gain, the best set of phases for them on the day.  Lineouts were won by the throwing team, but the ABs scrum did some pushing around.  Lot’s of pick’n’goes for both sides, probably due to fitness.  Of the 10 tries, only two came from clean back play.  For the Fog, more ball to the wing would have slowed the opposition’s scoring rate, and could’ve led to points.

The after match celebration was required the flipping of cups…oh, and some pizza.

See you in the Rucks,
Kevin
