South American Championship Rugby Sevens 2012

For the first time, the Brazilian Confederation of Rugby (CBRu) held in Rio de Janeiro the main Rugby Sevens tournament in the South America. Between days  March 10th-11th, the stadium of the Gavia, the Club Regatas of Flamengo, Rio will receive the Sevens – South American Championship Rugby Sevens.  The competition, which has direct supervision of the continental board, is a major regional event in the sport season. Besides Brazil, nine teams compete for the title: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela. Ecuadorian and Guatemalan special invitation to play by CONSUR.

The success of the South American Rugby Sevens 2011, in Bento Gonçalves (RS), weighed to the Brazilian Confederation of Rugby (CBRu) earned the right to host the tournament in 2012 and 2013. The tournament held in the south responded to high demands of the entity and demonstrated the ability of Brazilian rugby organize big events. The return of the sport on the Olympic schedule also benefited from the choice of the state capital to host the event.

The Brazilian Women, who advocate a hegemony of seven years, playing the first phase in Pool A against Uruguay, Peru and Venezuela. In Pool B are Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Paraguay.The event promises to be an even greater challenge for the women’s team, which won all editions of the tournament, held since 2004 (except 2006). “We treat the women’s team of Brazil with Argentina’s men’s team. Thus, we will do everything not to lose hegemony and maintain their unbeaten mainland,” says José Eduardo Moraes, coach of the women.
