USA Rugby Restructure Proposal for Women’s Club D1 & D2

A few months ago an ad hoc National Championships sub-committee was created to compliment the USA Rugby Club Strategic Committee’s proposal for a restructuring of senior club competitions that would create one national schedule incorporating both the men’s and women’s divisions. The goal of the ad hoc sub-committee was to review the proposal, establish open communications directly with women’s D1 and D2 clubs to discuss basics of a national competitive schedule; and, to address issues raised where possible, and to return to the full committee those concerns requiring changes to the draft proposal.

Invited CSC members to this sub-committee included: Dre Khoury (WPL/MARFU/D1-CR3), Lisa Gartner (MW, D1-CR2), Kilian Kerwin (SoCal, D1/D2 -CR1), Jamie Burke (Int’l Athlete, WPL, D1/D2 -CR3), Wendy Young (YSC Rugby Editor, West, D1-CR2). Committee lead was USA Rugby Club Strategic Committe member Tam Breckenridge.

The ad hoc group’s recommendations were reviewed by the full CSC National Championships Sub-Committee without any questions or concerns noted, which means this information is fine for release. Below please find the notes from the ad hoc sub-committee and an updated D1/D2 proposed alignment by CR which provides a more accurate status for American CR2 (SoCal), placement of Pittsburgh over to National CR1 (I put them in D1?), and bump up to Monmouth / Morris for National CR4 (Harrisburg moving to D2) at suggestion of the Harrisburg/Eastern Penn women’s rugby officer.  Everything is still tentative, not to be firmed up until after the Fall season and clubs can request/petition to change CR’s and/or divisions.

Original Restructure Proposal (Jan 2012)

Restructure Ad Hoc Review (Approved March 2012)
D1/D2 Proposed Alignment (Approved March 2012)

NOTE: The process of reviewing and discussing details continue with the other senior divisions in an attempt to develop a best format for USA Club Rugby.  The one firm detail in the proposal is the ultimate goal of restructuring USA Rugby Senior Club Competitions from top to bottom.  Everything above is still in a tentative/provisional status; what was proposed in January will continue to develop and be fine-tuned with further input.

NOTE: The 2012 Season for Women’s Club D1 & D2 will remain the same. The earliest a new format would be adopted would be Summer 2013.

  1. The proposed alignment is INSANE! 40+ Div 1 clubs?!?! Looking at the list. half of the clubs are “okay” Div 2 clubs at best and would benefit very little from playing up. And the Div 2 pools, outside of CR1 and CR4, are so watered down that any club moving forward would be truly unprepared.

I would think the smarter move would be to follow something closer to college model/original restructuring model… why try and force the smaller, more social clubs into a competitive structure? Someone needs to say “Its okay to play social rugby.” And why try and make D1 clubs out of REAL Div 2 clubs?
