from USA Rugby:

BOULDER, Colo.  – Janet Flamming, a Minnesota high school and college rugby coach has been presented with the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) – a national non-profit committed to providing all youth and high school athletes a positive, character-building youth sports experience – 2012 Double-Goal Coach Award Presented by Liberty Mutual Insurance.

The list of finalists included two USA Rugby coaches; Maia Carney (Fairfax Police Youth Club Lady Jags Rugby, Woodbridge, Va.) and Flamming, who coaches the Minnetonka H.S. Girls and the University of Minnesota Women’s team.

Flamming also played for the Twin Cities Amazons and is a certified referee in addition to her USA Rugby coach certification.

PCA each year names 20 youth or high school sports coaches from throughout the U.S. as Double-Goal Coach Award winners, honoring them for pursuing the goal of winning, and an even more important goal, teaching life lessons through sports. Award winners – to be announced in mid-February – receive a stunning trophy, $250, and recognition in PCA’s media campaigns, website and e-mail newsletters.

“All the finalists are to be congratulated for their outstanding service to youth and their communities,” said PCA Founder and CEO Jim Thompson, author of eight books on youth sports, including Elevating Your Game, The Power of Double-Goal Coaching and Positive Sports Parenting.

The nomination and testimonial letters submitted on behalf of the finalists are incredibly moving and show the power of a Double-Goal Coach to have a positive impact on young lives.”

About Positive Coaching Alliance

Founded as a non-profit within the Stanford University Athletic Department in 1998, Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) is committed to providing all youth and high school athletes a positive, character-building youth sports experience. To that end, PCA has conducted more than 10,000 live group workshops nationwide for more than 475,000 youth and high school sports coaches, parents, student-athletes and school/organizational leaders. Through workshops and companion online courses, PCA has impacted more than 4 million youth.

PCA’s partnership network includes more than 1,700 youth sports organizations, cities and schools. In 2012, PCA will conduct roughly 1,200 live, group workshops across the U.S., while assisting tens of thousands of other individuals via online courses at www.PositiveCoach.org. PCA workshops and courses strive to establish these prevailing models in youth and high school sports:

  • The Double-Goal Coach®, whose first goal is winning, and whose second, more-important goal is teaching life lessons through sports
  • The Second-Goal Parent®, who concentrates on life lessons, while letting coaches and athletes focus on competing
  • The Triple-Impact Competitor®, who strives to impact sport on three levels by improving oneself, teammates and the game as a whole.

PCA has the support of elite coaches and athletes on a National Advisory Board, including National Spokesperson and 11-time NBA Champion Coach Phil Jackson.
