The Need to Improve Womens Rugby Coaches Compensation at all Levels

As a professional rugby recruiter, I continue to get frustrated with the overall lack of any forms of compensation for coaches of womens rugby teams that spend countless hours supporting the growth and development of women’s rugby. Many of these coaches have spent a significant amount of  their own finances to get their rugby coaching certifications , drive long distances to practices and games and give up countless hours of volunteer time to their clubs.

To change this situation we need clubs at all levels to start to value their coaches, build some form of compensation into their clubs budgets and provide at the start atleast expense reimbursement for expenses incurred.

Most of us are involved because of our love and dedication to the game, I do not expect clubs to provide full time salaries to coaches , just be more aware of what they could provide depending on the playing level and skill of the teams.

Many of the University teams start off  as clubs but as they move into being considered a varsity sport, they need to ensure they provide additional compensation for coaches.

If you have any suggestions on how we can accomplish this goa , please drop me a line at  Lee@rahrahrugby.com

  1. I agree with the sentiment, but I’d have to ask as what level do we start to compensate coaches?
I would feel a little strange accepting even expenses (although I’d be a fool to turn them down) at my level – although I did have the luxury of having my Level 1 paid for by my Club, so technically I suppose I have already been compensated.
From a Club perspective the risk is of where you stop? Are the Junior Coaches, who (ideally) bring fresh blood into the senior teams any less valuable than the Womens’ Coaches – so should we be compensating them too? A potentially expensive proposition …
