Northeast Wins USA Rugby All Star 7s

Even thought the Northeast went 2 and 1 during Pool Play on Day 1, they muscled their way to the final against The Developmental USA Squad, the Stars and Stripes. NRU started the competition on Saturday with a renwed vigor that included a smashing of the West 33-7 and then in the Semis they had sweet revenge over Pacific, beating them 19-12. Vanesha McGee continued her stellar weekend scooting around the corner for the last minute try and sealing the victory for NRU.

The Stars and Stripes had an easier journey to the Final, they were unbeaten in Pool Play and defeated SoCal and MARFU on Day 2 to face NRU in the final. The Stars seemed to be missing their Stripes though as they faced a tough NRU team. The best of the Developmental USA team put on a show, but in the end experience paved the way for NRU.

Danielle Miano from NRU had a strong weekend (scored the most tries in the tournament), scoring first and then again for NRU in the final. Katie Johnson answered back quickly from Stars & Stripes and before halftime the teams traded tries with Jessica Peterson for Northeast and Rebekah Siebach for the Stars and Stripes. That made it 19-12 to NRU at the break.

Coming out of the break, NRU put on a colossal show that included tries from Peterson and McGee. Siebach did squeeze in another try but that was their only spark in the half. Deven Owsiany and Miranda Previte sealed the scoreline for NRU late in the second half. Final score was 41-17 to NRU over the Stars and Stripes.

Meanwhile in the 3rd/4th match, Pacific bested MARFU 12-7 with an overtime try from Irene Gardner. The Midwest beat SoCal 19-7 for the Bowl (5th), and the Shield (7th) went to the South, which beat the West 19-12.
