The Detroit Women’s Fall 2012 rugby season started early this year, with the first league match against Chicago Women on Saturday, August 25.  Detroit began practices in mid-July to prepare for the season in the Women’s Division I Competitive Region 2 (CR2).

Throughout the match Chicago Women had strong forward play, especially in the breakdowns rucks, and mauls.  Chicago’s lone try came from the forwards in the second half, from a pushover try from a scrum.  The Chicago scrumhalf was very dynamic in running the ball, along with 8, and 12 who had several strong runs.

The Detroit backs were able to get the ball wide and use their speed on the outside.  However, knock-ons while trying to offload the ball after a tackle denied Detroit several opportunities to score.  Two tries were scored on the wing, and two scored from kicking and chasing the ball down the field.  The Detroit forwards did a good job of controlling the fringe defense, and withstood the Chicago forward crash ball.

Detroit’s next league match is on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at Chicago North Shore in Chicago, IL.
