Greeley hosts Women’s Eagles Top 60 Camp

BOULDER, Colo. — With the France tests drawing ever closer, the team that will represent the United States must first be selected. The Top 60 camp, May 18-26, provides an opportunity for the players to win a spot against France. The University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO plays host, for the second consecutive year, to the events that determine the Women’s Eagles squad.

The focus of the camp is testing the player’s ability to perform in a highly competitive setting. The squad will be split into two teams and will compete in a three-match series. Also on the slate are classroom and weight lifting sessions scattered throughout the schedule.

“The Olympic Eagle Training Centers are focused on individual skill development,” said Head Coach Pete Steinberg. “The Top 60 camp is really about seeing if players can perform the skills we are looking for in a test-match like environment, not just once, but three times throughout the week.”

The players were selected primarily through the OETCs, however a number of players were identified by both the Collegiate All-American and Junior All-American program. Three players Meya Bizer, Anne Peterson and Hope Rogers, will leave the camp early to participate with the Junior All-Americans at the Olympic Training Center.

All practices and scrimmages will take place at the athletic fields of the University of Northern Colorado and will be run by the current Women’s Eagles staff, implementing the Eagles approach to play for the summer. Each team will have a leadership group that will be responsible for the development of their team. The matches are scheduled for Sunday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 2 p.m.

“We are looking for players who not only can play high level rugby, but can be great teammates,” Steinberg said. “The environment will be player led and staff supported so we want to see how the players want to drive the development of their team.”

Fans looking to attend the matches will be able to do so free-of-charge. University of Northern Colorado parking rates and guidelines will apply to all attending fans parking on the campus.

“These are going to be the highest level of domestic competition ever on US soil and it would be great to have a good crowd turn out on the match days,” said Steinberg. “I know the players would love to have a ton of screaming fans there.”

Steinberg continued: “It would also make it more realistic for what they will see in moving.” Referring to the France matches and Nations Cup, both taking place this summer respectively.

The Women’s Eagles will host the French internationals for a three match series. The first two test matches will take place June 7th and 11th at Oxnard College near Los Angeles and each will kick off at 5pm. The final match is on the 14th and will be at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. The match will take place prior to the Men’s Eagles test against Tonga, that evening at 8 p.m. (PT).
